Quadratec takes you to the New York International Auto Show
Monday April 24th, 2006
When the news was announced that Jeep® (DaimlerChrysler) planned the NYC public debut of the long-awaited 2007 4 door Wrangler Unlimited, we knew we had to go see it for ourselves. Manhattan's Javits Convention Center was the place to see the new 'JK' Wrangler and a whole lot more from our favorite automaker!
Sunday April 23rd was the last day of the 2006 New York International Auto Show. But we're taking you there now with this inside story and some of pictures from our digital camera.
The Jeep display at the show is much more than the normal boring-old auto show display with trucks randomly parked on carpet. 'Camp Jeep NY' is an entire big-top tent pavilion outside the main hall of the convention center, featuring every Jeep model including the new 2 and 4 door Wranglers (in Rubicon trim) and also the new Jeep Compass.
The display contained parked vehicles, engine cutaways and other interactive displays for the whole family. The action-packed highlight, however, is the complete indoor obstacle course - with thrilling rides in every model of Jeep. About a dozen Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Commander and Liberty vehicles had full passenger loads of show attendees, many being exposed to these trail conditions for the very first time. For some, the ride was a little too exciting, because we saw more than one rider panic and ask to be let out of the Jeep!
The long line to catch one of these demo rides was about 45 minutes to one hour. We're pretty sure that only the most jaded (advanced) rock crawling fanatics could walk away from this demo ride with a "normal" heart rate. Challenges included wet/mud traction, an articulation ramp, a steep hillclimb and descent, and several other jarring obstacles. Some of them are almost as big as Manhattan potholes!
We think the undisputed star of the floor is the new 2007 Wrangler, and it looks great in both 2 and 4 door configurations. Those of us who are Jeep Dads are especially thrilled that the days of having to give up the freedom of a Wrangler just because of a growing family will soon be over!
4 door Unlimited is way overdue, and we can't wait!
The new Wrangler is cool out of the box, but for enthusiasts, it is just the beginning.
We see a lot of potential for both the new 2 & 4 door Wrangler, and the inside scoop is that all of Quadratec's hundreds of Jeep aftermarket manufacturers are designing & building awesome new products for the 2007 Wranglers right now. We can't wait to see the results as this year progresses. SEMA should be extra-cool this year!
