Cooper Tires All Stock National 2009

Thursday September 10th, 2009
Team Quadratec’s season was coming to an end with only one event left, The Cooper Tires All Stock Nationals. Coming off a second place in Dayton, TN, did we have what it takes to win the nationals and beat the best teams in the country? We had a seventeen hour trek to Hannibal Missouri. Friday afternoon we had tech inspection in downtown Hannibal where we got to debut our TJ’s new paint job courtesy of Smokindesigns and brand new set of BFGoodrich KM2’s on 17 inch trail-ready beadlocks. It was also a good time for us to size up our competition for the weekend. There were a few teams we never ran against that appeared right away to be forces to be reckoned with.

We woke up Saturday to beautiful weather and adrenaline flowing through our veins. With family and friends there to support us from all over the east coast the pressure was on. Are we one hit wonders or can we prove to be real champions! Saturday’s courses were very slick from Friday’s rain. From past experiences in Hannibal we knew we had a long day ahead of us. We started last on C1 which proved to be no match for the Team Quadratec TJ. We did take a cone out on gate two but completed -15 points worth of bonuses to give us the best score of the day on that course. C2 was a whole different ball game with very slick climbs proving to be rough on other competitors but the KM2’s cleaned out and climbed very well but we ended up pointing out when we hit a banner at the top of the hill. We were almost the only team to complete the course but no cigar. C3 was going to be a tough course as well. At this point no one has completed it. The course took us up an almost impossible climb which pushed us to try the bonus line first. It was a very slick rocky hill climb that was getting dugout by prior competitors that were rejected. With a full throttle assault and the aid of a spotters strap to keep the nose down while keeping traction at the max our TJ made it look like child’s play. Team 832 was the only team to finish this course all day! Going into our final course our heads were high being the only team to finish C courses so far and we knew if we finish three out of four we would have an amazing lead going into Sunday. And that we did with the best score of the day. We rapped up Saturday with the best score on 3 out of 4 courses and a 77 point comfort zone in first place.

Going into Sunday with a demanding lead was sure a good feeling. We can lose the lead just as quick as we got it though. The courses were a lot dryer today with a lot of bonuses and we had a few team within striking distance of us. Our strategy today was to play it safe while maintaining our lead by taking the bonuses that couldn’t take us out of the lead with a roll or DNF. C1 had a tricky first gate which no one cleared clean and two bonuses that were very difficult. We chose to bypass the bonuses to finish the course clean. C2 again had 2 bonuses that we knew other competitors couldn’t complete so we took the normal line and finished with a perfect score. My favorite course of the day was C3 with 30 points of potential bonuses. We had to start at the top of the huge rock face with a slow decent and a hard off camber left turn to make a bonus. During the approach to the bonus we hit the driver side cone but we cancelled out those points upon completion of the bonus. Then a 180 degrees turn to make another bonus and out the finish gate for an almost perfect run. Next was our last course of the day before the shootout. We were very familiar with course from past events so we made quick work of it to get ready for the shootout. What a great day we had and playing it safe was the right thing to do. Jake Goode did gain some ground on us but not enough to apply any pressure. Going into the shootout we had enough lead that we didn’t even have to finish the course, just clear 2 gates. Of course we finished it though were nearly seven minutes left on the clock.

Wow, what a ride! This would be our second Cooper Tire All Stock Nationals in a row and third National title in four years. It is amazing to be able to represent our sponsors in this fashion, especially Quadratec, a company that prides themselves with great product and service. It is amazing to be able to serve them in the same fashion on the playing field.
