Recap from the All Truck Nationals in Carlisle, PA

Friday August 4th, 2006
Carlisle Events, host of collector car, truck and motorcycle events, attracts more than 500,000 visitors to the 82-acre fairgrounds in Carlisle, Pa., annually. Every summer Carlisle is the host of a three day event called the All Truck Nationals. The event celebrates all-things-truck, bringing in nearly 35,000 visitors. Upon entering the fairgrounds, visitors see everything from the smallest low rider sport truck to the largest 18 Wheelers, and countless vehicles in between. Many vehicles are shown and judged. It’s even possible to place your vehicle for sale, or purchase a vehicle using the on site financing services and notary publics. The All Truck Nationals is also host to an extensive range of vendors in the swap meet areas trading and selling parts for everything imaginable.

But, The All Truck Nationals is not just a truck show. There are activities for the entire family and several events scheduled throughout the three-day event. There are monster truck rides where an entire family can feel what it’s like to crush cars! At the free motor -bike sport show you can see bikes doing mid-air tricks after jumping from ramps. Everyone looks forward to Saturday, which features the burnout contest and the Bikini Contest to crown the next “Miss All Truck Nationals”.

For the past few years the All Truck Nationals has offered their participants an off-road show called the Rock Crawl. This is an event that is invitation only and sponsored by Rausch Creek Off-Road Park in Camp Hill, Pa. Over 20 truck loads of rocks in various were hauled in to set-up the rock craw course. Bruce Shallis, the event coordinator and manager of Rausch Creek Off-Road Park, works hard every year to give the crowd and the drivers a fantastic experience.

This year’s event featured professional drivers from Team Full Circle Racing, Rock Steady Racing, Team Quadratec (with their unlimited class rock crawling buggy), and several other vehicles from people who are known in the local area for their superb four wheeling talents. The vehicles ranged from wild to mild, as everything from a stock Cherokee and Toyota truck to a custom built tube buggy riding on 52” tires. Typical breakage included broken axle shafts and cut tires, but it didn’t keep people from having a good time. The crowds’ gasps and awe were evidence that all were entertained.

It’s not abnormal to have “special guest” attend the Rock Crawl. In the past, we had professional motorcycle builders stop by and other automotive legends. This year, Stacey David of Trucks! TV fame stopped by for a little one on one off-roading, taking various vehicles across the rock course and spending some time talking to the drivers and exchanging ideas. Stacey even took a few minutes sign some autographs and pose for pictures.

The days were hectic as the Rock Crawl had to be coordinated with other tasks such as filming segments for various television spots and commercials. Some drivers even took time out of their day to take children on slow rides across the easy course and talking to spectators about their own vehicles or answering general questions.

The event wound down and everyone packed up ready to go home. Drivers and spectators alike were exhausted from the day’s events. As usual, there was the standard amount of good-natured ‘hi-jinks’. Drivers tend to play play practical jokes on each other and each other’s rigs around the parking lots. The Rock Crawl was dismantled until next year’s All Truck Nationals. Friends both new and old said “good bye” till the next year, as the sun set on yet another great off-road event.
