Quadratec tests the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited... the Quadratec way!
Tuesday September 19th, 2006
On September 19th, 2006 our staff of Jeep experts at Quadratec got a chance to play with and analyze a new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4-door. This particular vehicle is painted in "Red Rock Crystal Pearl". Its an "X" model with automatic transmission, 4.10 gears, hard top and a hand full of other options.
As a first impression, the new Wrangler is beautifully designed. The
hood line rises steadily to the windshield, with a more modern interpretation of Jeep styling cues like hexagonal wheel wells and seven slot grill. As you look to the back of the vehicle, the chiseled lines and square windows give it an old-school heritage feel.
Underneath, the transfer case skid (known as the "shovel" to Jeep loyalists) is gone. Instead, everything is tucked neatly between the frame rails, leaving an amazing amount of ground clearance. The front axle is a high-pinion Dana 30, the rear a Dana 44. The drive shaft spinning the rear wheel looks beefy and must be 4 inches in diameter.
Under the hood of Jeep's flagship vehicle is a well tuned 3.8L V-6.
This powerplant makes this Jeep feel like it has much more power than it's TJ predecessor. Upon inspection of the engine bay, we noticed a conspicuous space between the front of the engine and the electric fan for the radiator. This space could allow a "certain auto manufacturer" to use an engine with two more cylinders (Read V-8) with apparently little effort. (Hint hint, nudge nudge.)
On to the good stuff... We're all Jeep loyalists here at Quadratec.
As you can imagine, none of us were satisfied with just a simple test drive. So we brought out our RTI ramp and see how well a stock 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited can really do.
Remember two things:
1. We did not disconnect the sway bar
2. This vehicle has a 116 inch wheelbase.
With that, please enjoy the videos and pictures below:
