A mono-tube shock absorber is built with the shocks components in a single tube. The shocks case works as a cylinder, with a piston valve, oil and gas. A mono-tube design uses a free piston which separates the oil chamber from the gas chamber within the tube.

A mono-tube shock is able to release heat with less effort than a twin tube shock. They are also less prone to cavitation. A larger oil capacity and greater heat dissipation allows for a stable damping force that remains continuous and predictable. A stiffer ride than a comparable twin tube is common because of the required highly pressurized gas in the structural design.
