Reviews for Alpine PSS-21WRA Full Sound System Upgrade for 15-18 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JK
Excellent product and detailed instructions were very helpful. Beats the stock system any day.
First thing I do to all my cars is add a sub and upgrade my speakers. I’m not one to cut up or modify my new cars so this system fit the bill. I pre ordered product and could not wait to get it. It did not disappoint and 6 months later I’m very pleased with the investment. Installation takes way more than the 2.5 hours (maybe if jeep was completely disassembled before you started) I installed all the mids and separates one night and installed the sub the second night. Probably 5 hours total with another hour playing with my new toy. Sound is really good. One of the hardest things in any sound system is getting enough mid bass. This design is spot on. Bass is more than you will ever need and it’s surprising how you have no clue where the sub is actually mounted (under passenger seat). I personally did not use or mount the bass knob that comes with system. I find the factory recommendation to set the amp at is perfect for me. The base knob might be a must for some (kids, wife might not like a sub) but it’s not over done at all. The high end is super crisp and clean. If you play the recommended Mikael Jackson man in the mirror track you can really hear the clarity (sub struggles a tiny bit with base that low on that song) but for 95% of what is out there...... it’s awesome. Music with top off sound just as good. Buy it.... it won’t disappoint and you loose NO room in back!
This system is incredible. Better systems may be able to be had for the money but they won’t be this easy to install since Alpine gives you everything you need. I’m most amazed by the quality of the bass coming from the sub. Moving the bass from the cargo area to under the seat makes a big difference. The system really compliments the X209 Radio I installed and combined make for a great listening experience!
I get many compliments on the quality of sound they have. The kit was well stocked with items needed. It only took my Husband 4 hours to install.
I purchased this system because the stock setup was not cutting it during situations where I was driving with the windows down. I also remember cranking up the radio when the top is off and experiencing a complete loss in mid-range and bass tones. So, I searched for solutions, on forums, at audio retailers, and online.
I came across the PSS-21WRA on YouTube, and it seemed to check all the boxes. Don't want to give up valuable cargo space? Check! The sub and amp sit in a down-firing position under the passenger seat. (You would never know they are there unless someone told you.)
Disappointed in the output of the factory head unit and cheaply built speakers? Check! The Alpine amp drives more than twice the wattage of the factory head unit, and the speakers are of a substantially better quality.
Looking for a bit more bass without annoying the neighborhood or bothering other drivers at traffic lights? Bingo! This system is loaded deep tonal capabilities. The replacement 6.5's can hit remarkably deep, and the sub does a very nice job for such a small unit. On the flip-side, the sound is mostly contained in the vehicle. Don't expect to rattle someone else's windows! (If that is your expectation, you probably aren't driving a Wrangler anyways.)
The product comes fully equipped with everything you need to hook the system up. You'll want to make sure you have gone through the manual to check that you have all the appropriate tools. (Order some extra polyfill from Amazon and stuff if while you have all the cavities open. This stuff is magic to keep things from rattling.)
My only knock on the setup is the directions. The drawings can be a bit vague, and they tend to oversimplify, or skip certain steps entirely. This site lists install time as 2 hours. Not if you want to do it right. For a skilled technician, who has worked behind the dash of a Wrangler before, this is a 4 hour job with the goal of making everything look professional.
Make sure not to follow the directions of tightening the sub/amp mount once the seat has been returned to the vehicle. There is no room for a screwdriver next to the center consol. Everything can be secured prior to replacing the seat. The tweeters also require splicing to mate to the wiring adapters. Make sure you have the appropriate wiring tools and securing methods for this. (The instructions are very vague about the connections.)
The settings in the manual are great though. I would not turn the amp or sub past the recommended settings. There is plenty of power and more than enough bass. With a bit of patience, the right tools, a pack of black zip ties, and a little experience in wiring and dash removal, the average home mechanic should be capable of performing this install.
I am very happy, overall, with this purchase!
Components seems well built and fit factory placements. Wiring seemed complete and functional but I would recommend laying out entire wiring system and making sure all ends are correct. The ends were direct fix to the jeeps plugs, but the x-overs were not plug n play as described.
You'll need all the stuff in install manual plus, impact wrench(seat screws were tight!) Possibly a soldering kit, wire stripper/crimper and spade connectors of different gauges if wiring was like mine. Took a lot longer for me, but having the above stuff will make it quicker.
One speaker had a crack coming out of box so I had to email and get a replacement right off the bat.
My issues below:
1. Crack in front speaker, possibly due to poor packing.
2.X-overs for soundbar tweeters were a pain. They will need to be soldered(suggested) once threaded through opening between tweeter and speaker, other wise you'll need to do what I did; drillout hole so x-over fits through.
3. Not totally plug n play, many of the connectors either had two female ends or bare wire. Ended up cutting most off and soldering then shrink wrapping connections. 4. The main power supply wires both had male ends so I had to cut them off and buy new spade connectors and a stripper/cripper as well.
5.Did not come with poly fill sheets, I use quilt batting that I happened to have. Use more than the one 12" square. I found it not enough for soundbar speakers, with so much wiring and the x-over rattling in there.
All in all, a good system, just more work than a plug n play setup should be. Sound is great, a heck of a lot better than the stock stuff.
Installed in a 2015 JKUR. This was added to a stock 130 head unit. It sounds great! The only reason it gets 4 instead of 5 stars is because of the poor directions: 1. I needed to use youtube to figure out how to do the back speakers with the adapter. 2. The plug for the amp was not listed and I had to figure on my own how to plug it in so the subwoofer worked properly as it gave too much base through the 2-ways instead of the subwoofer, with the instructional plug configuration for the 130 unit. Just took some common sense and reading the amp plug labels to quickly figure it out. 3. The wiring that goes under the Jeep from the battery to the amp is not clear where it comes up under the seat. After a good deal of research, I finally figured out it is meant to come up through the drain plug grommet. You do NOT have to go through the Jeep firewall and do NOT have to drill any metal, just drill a hole in the rubber grommet, run through that and use silicone (mentioned in the directions) to seal the grommet back up. It works awesome, once you figure it out. I did add a little more polyfill than that which came with the set, some old stuffed animals of the kids put to good use :) I used factory settings on the amp and it is great with or without the top. I love having a great sound system with a head unit due to theft prevention. People always try to steal the head units, but this is like a sleeper stereo now where it looks like junk at first glance, but is actually really great.
Very good product. Not exactly plug and play as described. As someone stated before, you will have to splice the x-overs to the tweeters. Install time was about 6 hours for me, but if you do this for a living, then I could see it taking considerably less time. The diagrams were good, but a little more detail couldn't hurt. The awesome thing was that when I turned it on, it worked perfectly. I didn't have to adjust anything on the amp or sub at all. The suggested settings were spot on.
Great sound, the instructions weren't very clear about which seat to put it under, it felt like they wanted the sub under the driver and amp under passenger? That's my only complaint. The tweeters need to be spliced( remember that the white goes to the clear wire on the tweeter, while the black chord goes to the clear with black strip) I took off the adapters completely and spliced like that(no idea why they had attachments on the ends?). With all is said and done the tweeters sound amazing. Will take 4-5 hours to wire it in unless you have done it before. I put all the sub and amp under the drivers seat and just ran the wire through the pocket in back of the console under the radio. Overall it's a pain to install but very rewarding when completed
Here is the deal: This system is almost plug-and-play. You will have to splice the tweeter crossovers. Hint: Wire the speakers to the amplifier and test everything before securing the seat to the Jeep. I had some signal issues and spent considerable time getting the connections solid. Also, the factory recommended settings on the amp are incorrect. You will need to have the filter for Ch 1&2 off. If not, you will have no sound in the front speakers. Once all said and done, you will have to tweak the crossover settings to reduce feedback in the tweeters. Decent system, but will piece my own together in the future. Installed in ‘17 JKU.
