Reviews for Tuffy 349-01 Tailgate Lock Box for 18-22 Jeep Wrangler JL
Simple install. Toss the included spacers and buy some shorter screws and two 1/2” spacers. Then toss the Jeep interior trim panel and install the security box with no spacers behind the top screws and the 1/2” spacer plus a washer behind the bottom screws. This pulls the security box in nice and tight with the tailgate. Next, the door does rattle, so remove the “D” weatherstrip along the top edge and replace with the next heavier gauge available at HD or Lowes and place a second strip along the top edge of the door. No more rattle.
Security that it offers
It locks. Jeep top is off so I need that.
Easy to install. Took about one hour. Other reviews said you might need the back door hinge stiffeners. I guess this depends on how much you load in the box. By itself this is not an issue.
My son in law wanted this for his birthday.
As far as installation, piece of cake, mainly because my boyfriend installed it, but it didn't take him long. The rattling tho...annoying AF. If you only lock one side it rattles alot more, but doors off, doesn't bother me at all. Serves it's purpose. I can put my 17" HP with case and Ipad and they fit perfectly. I've also squeezed shopping bags and small purse, so I would still recommend.
The box installed relatively easy. Thanks to other reviews, I added weather strip along the top and bottom to avoid the rattling sound. The 2 holes on the bottom were not drilled large enough for the included screws. Had to take a drill bit to make them wider.
The only down side is the box doesn't clear the lip on the Quadratec Ultimate All Weather Rear Cargo Liner. I will have to shave the lip down in order for the tailgate to close without needing to hold the lip down.
Love this box, it's perfect for my laptops, cameras or firearms with I travel. I removed the aluminum spacers and bolted it directly to the door and illuminate a hollow sounding noise when driving. I also replaced the phillips-head screws with 6mm cap-head screws. Over all this was a better choice then a under the set lock box.
Super easy to install and very secure. The down-side is that you really are limited to about a maximum storage weight of about 10 lbs. Overall, very pleased as it does allow some secured storage for valuables.
I like the way this fits. First, they say to drill holes in the body covering on the tailgate. You can just pop the top inset off and avoid drilling holes in it in case you want to replace it later. Just drill holes in the bottom, location is clearly marked by jeep so no question on where to drill.
I put shelving matting inside to keep rattling to a minimum, holding it in place with magnets.
You lose a few inches of storage space near the tailgate, but I would normally keep a box of these type of roadside supplies in the back anyway.
