Reviews for MasterTop Cable Style Bimini Top Plus in MasterTwill® Fabric for 07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK 2-Door
I used an older version bikini top for years and finally replaced it with this product.
The instructions, quite frankly, are horrible.
First, I like the fabric.
I had an older version (made by Bestop) and it lasted over 10 years. I had to modify it to make it work back then, after a lot of frustration -- I put in my own more durable straps and added a "stiffener" to the back edge (thin piece of wood, staple-gunned) so it didn't flap-flap-flap while driving over 40 mph. It worked. I'm an engineer, this was not hard. Where was the Bestop engineer back then?
As for this one. The good news is that I like the fabric better than the last one and I expect to get 10 years of life out of this one as well.
On to the bad news. The instructions are dreadful. I had no idea how to make the installation of the door overlay work. The pictures did not match my vehicle and the conversion kit was unusable. So I will have to live with some worthless features such as the two springs and fabric loops.
Also, just like last time, there do not appear to be enough straps to make this top hold firmly at high speed. Sigh ... so just like 10 years ago I had my own made and installed, 5 per side. This top will hold tight as a tick at 70 mph now.
I also had sewn into the trailing edge a thin, narrow aluminum plate that was trimmed to fit perfectly between the roll bars. There will be no flap-flap-flapping either. I see that an earlier commenter complained about this.
So ... my recommendation is to purchase this product with your eyes wide open. I am disappointed that the manufacturer continues to make the same rookie mistakes (too few straps to secure the top, nothing to eliminate the flapping, not validating their installation instructions) and I strongly exhort them to look at these comments and do a better job with their designs.
Final point. I live in Southern California where there is little rain for 9 months of the year and the weather is always glorious. So now that the top is modified and installed, I will enjoy the shade it provides on hot summer days while letting the lovely breezes filter through my vehicle.
Unfortunately had to return this as the top does not come down over the roll bars as pictured, it is about 6” short. Apparently they changed this design but did not update the photos or the photos in the reviews. Rain rolls down directly down the backs of anyone sitting in the back seat.
Looks great and I love the twill material.
I put it on and used it for two days. The passenger side kept working itself over the door surround and was leaving a gap. I adjusted it several times and reinstalled it but it kept creating the gap after driving for a few miles. Also, the strap extensions started fraying and were in bad shape after two days of driving. Pulled it off and left it on the curb with the trash.
