Reviews for Smittybilt 2761 Security Storage Vault for 87-06 Jeep Wrangler YJ, TJ & Unlimited
could not be happier. i saw other reviews addressing the close fit. had my mechanic do the install. fits perfectly. strong, sturdy, well built and, with the tailgate closed, impossible to break into. i cut a 3/4 inch treated plywood as a buffer on top to carry coolers on top of it. the construction is easily strong enough for this task.
Have not installed it yet
Awesome storage bin. Wish the bolts were a 1/4 inch longer. Ended up making a trip to hardware store to buy longer bolts to make install easier.
Installation was very easy. The hardest part of the installation was removing the bolts to the seat and seat belt brackets. Other than that, the drawer frame fit easily (1 person job) and I used the original seat bolts to anchor this down.
Tons of room and lots of [now] secure storage. Note, you will need totally remove your rear seat, so if you ever want secure storage AND a rear seat, you'll need to go with a different option.
Hardest part of the installation was removing the bolts that that held the seat brackets to the floor. Holy crap. Two minor complaints. First, the mounting bolts need to be a half inch longer. Second, although it fits my LJ, it certainly wasn't intended for it. There's an 18" gap between the drawer and the tailgate which makes it substantially less secure than it could be.
When I removed the packaging and compared (eye balled and measured) the security box with the back of my 2000 TJ...I thought it would 'never fit'. But I dutifully followed the instructions, ignored my bias and by golly it fit. The biggest concern was the drawer not clearing the rear door latch. However, the folks at Smittybilt engineered it to fit. Whew. As with other critiques you will probably have to purchase a longer center bolt.
So like one fo the other reviewers said, if you want to install it with your carpet still in you will have to go to the hardware store and get 1/2" longer bolts. For the money you pay for it I think the slides could be a little beefier as well as the lock. Time will tell. ALSO, if you have an LJ you will have to use the back two seat holes and will have to drill the others if you want more than two bolts holding it down. I went with just the two (longer ones I had to go buy) and it seems to be pretty solid in there.
Install was easy, have had it for several years, used quite a bit. It was noisy till I lined it with padding.
I loaded is a few weeks ago with about 200 pounds of ammo (listed capacity is 350 pounds) and the track slide on the left side broke. I can purchase a replacement track (not from Quadratec) but would rather it supported the weight specified.
The sidetracks are not well made. The drawer slides smoothly, but the whole mechanism is flimsy.
Even with that, it locks securely, does what is should (so long as you don't put much weight in it) so it gets 3 stars.
Great idea but poorly made. Only about 1 year before latches were bent and the drawer flopped around. If it was built better then it would be a much more desirable product.
