JCR Offroad Base Utility Rack Reviews
It's well built and seems rugged tough, it also rides very well up there and cut's through the wind and is remotely silent. As the previous review said it does slightly sag in the middle at the tire mount (with a tire mounted), but from the outside it looks good and you can only tell if you really analyse it. The mounts were a little off out the box, but they were easy enough to bend and adjusted to width of the gutter mounts. I really do like my investment in the rack and am glad I have it for my use. I just went on a trip to Knoxville, TN & Charlotte, NC (from Missouri, 1400 miles total) to offroad and it was very handy to know my spare tire, reserved water and reserved gas was up there ready to go if I needed it and it did no unnecessary wear to the Jeep. The weight up there is barely noticeable as well.
NOTE: I bought the 6 pack of gutter mounting brackets separate thinking they sent none of them with the rack. Well I ended up with two sets of 6. Wish there had been a note somewhere stating that they came with the rack as hardware.
ANOTHER NOTE: These racks are made to order, I had to wait about two weeks after I bought it to finally receive it. Completely reasonable in my opinion, and kinda gives an unique feeling to know it is being built specifically for you. Luckily I ordered a month before I needed it and had plenty of play in my schedule
3rd NOTE: Definitely have another person to help you set it on, otherwise you will put scratches on the roof near the gutters, I even did, setting it on carefully with two people. Mainly because the mounts were slightly off.
4th NOTE: If you get this bare metal, assemble it, get it comfortably able to fit into the gutter mounts, then take it off and paint it. just so you don't have to chip paint off the rack bending the mounts into right place, I used a small pipe wrench with the gutter mounts installed to bend mine to the right place.
5th NOTE: Also if you assemble this on the ground it may look weird and as if it will not level out, but once you put in on the Jeep just move from the back mounts forward and it will level out! Just put one last tightening on the center bolts to be sure. The clamps also will feel as if they are not going on, but then suddenly pop into place.
LAST NOTE: on my drivers side front door, the hinges are a little weak, and it had just enough play to barely clip the clamp part of the gutter mount, I trimmed the clamp back an 1/8 inch and fixed that issue (now to fix the hinges, yay).
Only reason I give it a 4 out of 5, is due to the effort I put into getting it to fit onto the gutters right, the bending and adjusting shouldn't have to happen in my opinion, but otherwise it is well worth giving money to this American owned operated and founded company. Worse case scenario this rack can easily be modded and customized to be what you want it to be, with JCR's own stuff or your own custom built or modded stuff at home! I really do love the way it looks and also in it's functionality awesome.
FIRST THE BAD- 1. I did not recieve all the hardware needed to assemble the rack, so a trip to the hardware store was needed. 2. My rack sort of "sags" near the location of the tire mount making it look a bit funny. 3. And this is my biggest beef with this rack. There needs to be more attachments for it. Provisions for a high lift, shovel & axe, Jerry cans, maxtrax. Things like that. Right now it's just rotopacs mount and a tire mounts available., so I'll have to fab my own.
THE GOOD - It's sturdy. It looks good. Easy to assemble. It's fairly large. Hopefully quality control will improve and more accessory attachments will come out soon.
