Great product! holds the tailgate open with a 35" spare on there. Saves getting smashed by a big heavy tire.

This product is awesome, every tj/lj should come from the factory with it. If you've done the hold the door open with your body while you shuffle stuff in and out of the jeep on an off camber spot, then you'll really appreciate this piece. I owned an lj for 7 yrs and I'm kicking myself for not getting this for that jeep. Installation is easy even though the instructions look like a copy of a copy of a copy. It's not complicated. Buy it, you won't regret it!!

I like this a lot. Perhaps I'm easily entertained, because I keep showing this off to my friends. If you have stiff talegate hinges, you may not appreciate this product as much as I do.

My tailgate seemed to get in the way by frequently closing on me. Now the door powers open and stays open. It is a much stronger gas shock than I expected. My spare tire is not mounted to the tail gate but is on a separate tire carrier. This shock has more than enough oomph to keep the door open especially without a spare tire hanging on the gate. The gas shock is strong enough to keep my bumper mounted tire carrier open. Put the jeep on a left leaning hill, and the tire carrier will overcome the power of the shock, but this meets my needs really well.

Installation it not really a level three advanced. Read the instructions first and follow them. This is one of those projects where one would be seriously tempted to open the box and start installing. Stop and read the paper first. My installation took under an hour. I read twice, measured three times, marked once, and drilled nine times. (It takes nine screws.) The jeep metal is pretty thick where this mounts. While the kit includes self-tapping screws, I chose to pre-drill the mounting holes and I'm glad I did. The shock needs to be at an angle as shown in the pictures. This keeps the gas shock oil lubricating the seal. Otherwise, the seal could fail prematurely. It fits nice and tight against the body when opened and closed. The mounting brackets are heavily built to handle the leverage created by the pressure of the shock.

Now when I have a hand full of groceries or tools, I simply pull the tail gate latch and it opens on its own.

Bottom line: much better than I thought. Not a must-have but a really-nice-to-have.
