Description
Knowing what is going on inside your Jeeps engine is crucial to prolonging its life, and the gauges on the dash are not just there to fill the space. If your oil pressure gauge is bouncing around or stuck in one position, you probably need a new Crown Automotive Oil Pressure Gauge. Designed to fit in the original dash opening and read original sending units this gauge does have a slightly different installation due to the terminal configuration on the back of the unit.

What is the difference between this gauge and the 5520003-0005 J540640. Both say they apply to my Jeep, a 1976 CJ5. The above note says for 76-78 cj5 cj7 use J540640. Why? Thanks.

The primary difference between the two gauges comes down to the internal electrical design and the number of terminal studs on the back, which changed mid-production during the CJ era:
This Gauge (Crown Automotive J5750279): This is designed with 3 threaded studs (typically configured as 2 sending unit studs and 1 mounting/ground stud). While listed under broader 1976–1986 applications, it technically matches the updated electrical layout used on 1979–1986 models.
The Other Gauge (Crown Automotive J5460640 / Quadratec Part #5520003-0005): This is built to match the original factory layout for 1976–1978 models, featuring 4 threaded studs (2 sending unit studs and 2 mounting/ground studs).
Why does it matter for your 1976 CJ5?
Even though Jeep CJs from 1976 to 1978 can share physical dash bezel sizes, Jeep updated the gauge cluster wiring and stud configurations during these production years. If your 1976 CJ5 still has its factory-original wiring harness and cluster setup, it will use a 4-stud configuration.
Using the 3-stud version on a 4-stud wiring setup would require you to modify or adapt your existing wiring connections. Sticking with J5460640 ensures a direct, plug-and-play match for the original 4-stud layout found in 1976–1978 models without needing to rewire or rig the connections.

What is the correct oil pressure sending unit to accompany this gauge on a 1986 CJ7 with the amc 2.5? I believe they changed resistance ranges during the years. When I search for sending units for my Jeep on this site I get no results.

Part number 55108-0000 is correct for AMC 2.5 L See the following link. CJ AMC 2.5L Oil Pressure sending unit. Thanks for your inquiry.
