Since day one I kept on hearing vertical noise, at first, faint. I didn't think the brand new shock was defective, so I searched and searched for other causes. The noise got progressively worse, and over the couple of years (and roughly 7000miles), my XJ went through pretty much complete front-end rebuild, but the vertical noise persisted, and now significantly worse. At my wit's end, I finally removed the shock to inspect, and that's how I finally figured out that the piston rod has a pretty big play, like piston is loose inside. It must have been from the day one, if I suspected it, I would have sent it back. It's pretty annoying.
