Reviews for Quadratec 2 Bike Platform Rack for 2" Receiver Hitch
Overall, this rack has served me well for the past 4 years. I did have to replace one of the plastic wheel cups because it snapped off at the bolts. Customer service was great. My biggest complaint is the amount of rust this rack has on it. Even just after the first season it accumulated a lot of rust. I live in New England. We have harsh winters and salty, sandy roads. I ride my mountain bike year round, so taking my bike rack off in the winter is never gonna happen for me. I know a lot of this is on me. There is some play/wobble in the rack, too, even after re-tightening down all the bolts. Also, owning a Wrangler and having the swing gate and rear spare tire makes me have limited compatibility options. I guess considering the price of this rack ($350) it’s not so bad when others like 1Up and Kuat are $600+, but my friends have those with no rust issues and are super solid. I have seen people invert the side plates on 1Up racks to make them compatible with Wranglers, though. I guess I would like to see a new model of this rack released that’s made with a rust-free aluminum or some other better quality material. I would definitely consider buying it even if it cost a little more if it meant I would get more life out of it. Otherwise it’s been great for my Jeep, but I think I’m maxing out this year on only my 4th season.
Been using for 4 years without any issues, until the rust started this year.
Its a nice carrier but quite heavy in weight compared to my Kuat. Does not fit 2 fat tire bikes. the frame on the outer bike will hit the front tire upright of the inner one. I was able to cut and remount the outer about 8 inches further back now fits fine.
I ordered this bike rack on 02/28/21, it just came in 10/6/2021. They continuously kept pushing dates every Friday for when this would be shipped. My wife won’t let me order from Quadratec because of this. Otherwise seems like a sturdy rack.
First, fit and finish. This is a great product. Quadratec makes really high quality products and this is no exception. The finish is flawless. It bolts together easily.
But for function, I have 2 complaints:
1. Even with the tilt feature, you still have to remove the inner bike (closest to the spare) to be able to open the tailgate. Depending on the bike, you may have to remove both. In Quadratec's defense, the product images clearly show that, and I expected no less when purchasing it. Still, if you have to remove one or both bikes to open the tailgate, then what benefit is the tilt feature really granting?
2. The hitch pin hole is threaded and you have to use the included threaded pin/bolt. It's fantastic for eliminating any hitch rattles. Kudos for that. But you can't use any kind of locking hitch pin. Anyone with a 3/4" or crescent wrench can walk away with your bike rack in under a minute.
All in all, I wish I'd gone with a swing-away rack. But with COVID-19 bikes and bike accessories are really hard to come by. The Quadratec rack was in stock, so I went with it. It fulfilled its function, but I'll be looking for a better solution.
Installed rack. Drove roughly 500 miles in Florida over about 9 days (yes, a little rain and sandy mud...this is Florida). Came home, noticed a little rust on one of the joints. Unscrewed parts I had assembled, and lo and behold, rust...not just a little spot. For $350 +/-, I had higher expectations...so, tried contacting Chat...but no response, the bot says contact during office hours, but I am trying during office hours...Sorry Quadratec, but this is two strikes...
