Reviews for AJT Design Injection Molded Key Fob Cover for 18-21 Jeep Wrangler JL & Gladiator JT
As other reviews, YT vids, etc have noted - installation is incredibly awkward. Be prepared to get annoyed and reconsider life decisions while you are doing it. Once together, though, it's a lot nicer than the factory fob. Looks cool, feels smaller (although really it's not much smaller), carries easier. No key stabbing you upon accidental opening. I would give this thing 5 stars for quality and 1 star for ease of assembly, so that averages to 3 stars. Also be aware that your factory remote is likely going to be destroyed by removing the RFID chip - I had to cut mine out with a Dremel when no other technique would work. My final tip for install: there's a YT vid that shows this for a JT being installed essentially upside down / backwards. That's what finally got it for me. Start on the non button side of the fob and get the circuit board started on a peg, then squeeze the battery in and hold the circuit board in place on top of it and assemble the rest of the fob on top of that. If you need to hold the circuit board down (against the spring tension of the battery) you can use a strip of scotch tape and then pull it out after final assembly. Good luck!
Finally got the time today to swap out a factory fob for this one from AJT. 1st hint, keep the video handy..its a big help. Getting the battery set and the parts together proved to be a time consuming effort. Finally, got it together and screwed it finger tight. Time to try it out. Well, it does work, but it takes a monumental effort to push the lock/unlock buttons...didn't try the others. I think this one will stay on the shelf for emergency use only. Looks nice, seems well built except for the batter setup, but it takes a great effort to push the buttons to make contact, very much more effort than the factory fob. Be aware of this when you decide whether or not to buy it.
Don't ger me wrong this keyfob looks great and the installation is somewhat easy, I happen to have all the necessary tools so little damage while doing the installation.
About 3 weeks after I did the swap, the key pad somehow shifted and the horn would go up when I press the unlock, the screws did not came lose. Have to reassamble and so far so good.
Start the bad with on small thing. I found it a lot easier to leave the trangle part out. Very hard to press lock and unlock when it's present.
As a replacement key the details is just not there. There is no way you could perfectly seal up the front and back panel, there's always a gap. Very easy for moisture to get in. The plastic itself is prone to dents, one drop could get you a group of deep scratch.
I hope you could come up with a version where the other she'll have rubber padding/coating like some power tools do, add rubber gasket all around to make it at least weather proof. Will be using this until it gives up.
I wouldn't do it again. The OE key fob was destroyed while attempting to remove the transponder. In their installation video they even show someone using a box cutter to remove it. Closing the case due to the fitment of the battery was problematic, and the triangle rocker that is supposed to provide a distinct feel between lock and unlock does not provide that much of a rocker action.
I do like that the key no longer flips open in my pocket and has a convenient storage space on the new fob, but would not buy again.
First, I ordered my fob directly from AJT because:
1. Quadratec was out of stock
2. AJT had army green.
I really do not like leaving any feedback that is not stellar. But…I felt like the Quadratec family should see my review.
Watch the videos. Think about what this fob conversion requires you to do. One is, that you must dig out and move a very important piece of your factory fob, the transponder.
Assuming you get the transponder out, getting the battery placement so you can close the unit up is a ridiculous challenge. I think those who managed to get the unit together were lucky. Or perhaps more talented. I gave up after 2hrs trying to get the battery in this thing and put my factory fob back together.
The fact that you also remove the manual key and practically render it useless is just another design flaw I felt was annoying.
The idea was good. The design, not so much. I don’t recommend taking the factory fob that is the brains to your 60k Wrangler and messing with it. But that’s just me.
The possible benefits of this product are not worth the risk or effort, I don’t believe.
I’m bummed…I wanted it to work. I gave it my best effort. It didn’t work for me.
First of this isn’t Jeep red as was shown in the photos. What a pain in neck to assemble. To finally put the two halves together the video says you may has to tru this a couple of times. Try 20-30. Then be careful not to mushroom the plastic locating pins. Overall a poor design and totally the wrong color.
Nice looking FOB. However, putting it together is not the easiest thing to do. 3 hours to get the battery perfectly aligned to snap the covers together...the juice was not worth the squeeze and may patience are exhausted. Additionally, you get very little push when you depress the buttons...unlike the OEM FOB where you can really tell you are pushing a button. If I had not committed soo much time to getting it together, I would have returned it based on the lack of button action alone.
This gets a one star because its stated as "Made in America" and if this is the quality we are getting from a factory in the USA the engineers from AJT need to be fired. The plastic has no texture and shows every parting line. The bottom of the key shows the plastic injection point which is a huge blemish. The two halves don't align with each other and there isn't a gasket to keep water out. Last I don't know why you design it with plastic buttons instead of rubber, the tactile feel is terrible.
Cheaply made, looks almost tactical in the picture. Battery is a pain to install/replace. The worst is the key that stores inside, they should have made a groove at the end to slide the key in. Just using the key is very difficult with no lever. I had to use pliers to lock my glove box and center console. I do not recommend.
Don't waste your time with this. Nearly impossible to get the battery to sit properly while you're putting it together (both myself and bf tried). Buttons can stick, triggering the panic alarm. Got so frustrated with it, it went in the trash.
