Reviews for Insane Audio JL3001 Head Unit for 18-22 Jeep Wrangler JL and Gladiator JT
Wide array of applications
I love this thing. Seriously, it beautiful, does everything you want to to and WAY MORE, and was extremely easy to install. But I wish it was more plug and play. I have had to contact their very responsive and helpful customer support multiple times after the install to get my unit working properly.
Excellent
Offers lots of options with great sound and GPS
Awesome upgrade by the team at Insane Audio. Installed in my 2019 JLU (Right hand drive - Australian variant) with Premium Sound option.
A large 9" screen is much better than the OEM Mopar setup. Super clear high def images, videos, etc.
Very easy install. The wiring harness is cumbersome to account for all install options. But the connections are very straight forward. I also installed the Insane front rock camera...another easy install and works great.
I run the OEM backup camera and all works seamlessly as with the OEM setup. Be sure to connect the B+ wire to the red camera power wire (omitted from the early instructions...but necessary to get a picture). Thanks Greg Hincke for the Youtube help on that little hickup...https://youtu.be/VSnZHdlwqrs
I installed the speaker and mic and removed them the next day as they are a bit of overkill, take up space and are not necessary. The speaker just replicates the reverse beep and is a confusing duplication. I also left out the HDMI cable as I can't ever think of an occasion I wanted to connect my "projector" to the head unit for movies on the trail! That said, might be a future necessity to stream to the kids in the back if they sadly prefer to watch Peppa Pig whilst on the trail.
And if you can find six devices to connect to USB outlets...Insane have you covered with a pile more wires in there for that...yep, left a bunch of those out too.
The team at Insane Audio customer service are very quick to respond to emails and are incredibly helpful. A few tweaks needed in settings to get it all functioning properly for the RHD variant; and a quick update for the Premium Sound setup (to configure the amplifier installation)...all made very easy by customer service.
Install took only an hour or so...but you will spend longer getting it setup, customized with apps and looking the way you want it...but that's the fun of it.
The only minor issue I have with this is the phone connectivity. It is not as practical as the OEM Uconnect setup with voice dial recognition. The Insane team are working on a voice dial capability through Google Assist...hopefully that won't be far away.
I run an iPhone and it does work with the Android JL3001 platform...but it could be better (but probably never will be). I found it is better to run CarPlay via USB connectivity as you can't use Bluetooth and Hotspot on the phone at the same time with the JL3001. If you connect the phone to the JL3001 via Bluetooth, you can't access any data (online) functionality (via Hotspot)...but all the usual "vehicle" apps run offline anyway.
Nav is great with the larger screen. Google Maps, Waze and even Insane's nav engine all work seemlessly, though if you are not in the USA or Canada, expect to pay for maps to run the Insane nav app.
For my local use (in Australia), it would be better if the JL3001 radio ran a digital (DAB) option - as does the OEM head unit. The JL3001 only has options for AM/FM, which doesn't give access to a host of digital services broadcast free to air. Yes, you can run a multitude of radio "apps", but that uses data - and another Hotspot connection and potential subscription based app for just a radio feature. I've also noticed that the JL3001 (with a coax FM antenna connection has a lesser FM gain than the OEM unit (at least in my location).
One other thing to note, is that Hotspot only connects when you open it on your phone (every time you get in the car!)...even though the JL3001 can be defaulted to connect automatically...it is far from automatic.
That all said, a fantastic addition to the Jeep. Infinitely customizable (as they say) and well engineered platform by Insane Audio. Very happy to recommend and looking forward to watching this new platform evolve in the capable hands of the Insane team.
The touch screen seems solid and the Installation was easy with the help of youtube videos--I would recommend installing the GPS antenna on the roof side of the rollcage, and route the cable back to the dash.
Speaking of GPS, the Insane Audio's native GPS isn't user friendly, so I never use it.
This headunit is running an Android O/S, so pretty much anything you can do on your android phone you can do here. There's a third party app the will interface with apple car-play.
There are some infuriating software bugs. Mostly around bluetooth, gps and wifi.
This would be a 5 star review if it weren't for all the software glitches/bugs
We had JK2001s in both jeeps and one lasted two years, the other less than a year. They did honor the warranty on the second one and sent me the "latest & greatest", JK4001 which honestly had incredible sound...for a few months, then the right channel began working intermittently. I started a support ticket for it and they wasted my time until the warranty expired, then they stopped answering my emails.
Owned this radio for less than 2 months. Problems I encountered were:
1. Home button quit functioning
2. Nav card corrupted and couldn't be read
3. GPS stop working (no Waze)
4. Backup camera had vertical lines in it
Quadratec was awesome and sent me a return label for a full refund. Save yourself the headache and stay away from this radio.
I will be returning mine. Thank god for Quadratecs 30 day return policy. This thing is hot garbage. Apps take forever and a day to load. The radio app works when it wants to. Everything about this product can be described as "it works when it wants to."
Don't waste your time or money with this over priced brick.
If it worked as advertised it would be awesome. It flat out doesn't work as advertised. The unit is severely dissapointing. I wanted to love it, it looks great. But if I can't even start the Jeep and turn on a radio station then I might as well put the Uconnect 5 back in. At least the radio always comes on and bluetooth works consistently.
Thank God Quadratec is working with me to get me a unit that works for me. Install by the manual not easy, found videos much better online. Gps worked then stopped working. Could Not get it to synch to 5 g iphone even changing between 2.4 and 5 g settings. No apps would work bc no cellular service. Got some to work with home wifi but thats useless unless you don’t drive your jeep.
