Reviews for AEV 10404001AB CHMSL 3rd Brake Light for 07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK
The view out the Wrangler's rear window is blocked by several things; the spare tire, the wiper motor and blade, and the 3rd brake light. I cut the stock brake light off and replaced it with this AEV part. I find that it improved visibility significantly. With slight modification I was able to make it work with the stock Rubicon wheel. The wire harness is plug and play.
Totally awesome factory fit & finish EXCEPT that it doesn't fit in rubicon wheels. You need to trim the sides of the metal platform down a millimeter on each side to get it in. No big deal, but just a heads up.
Does not work with the factory Hard Rock wheels. Also did not work because of the addition of a back up camera. Expensive item to buy and find that out after the return period has closed.
Light is super bright. Installation wasn't difficult but I did have to enlarge the opening for the wire on the housing that holds the actual light itself. It didn't sit flush. I used a dremel tool to enlarge the opening for the wire and it worked like a charm. I also wasn't impressed with the push nuts. Putting the spare tire back on secured the assembly in place. I also am skeptical about the rubber grommet that pushes into the rear tailgate. The factory one was completely flush and sealed around the wire, the one that comes with this set up has an opening that will let water sit in it. I may seal that up somehow.
the mount plate that goes behind the spare tire against the tire carrier had surface damage and required refinishing and painting. The metal housing for the LED light required cutting, filing, sanding, and painting to accept the LED wire out the back per the instructions. Overall, I'm not too excited about the AEV brand and quality of their products. There is a severe lack of attention to detail which needs to be addressed with quality control issues. I would suggest considering alternate brands and parts for your jeep build. I've done a complete AEV JK build. I will not use AEV again for future jeep build projects.
