Reviews for Putco 12018 Luminix LED Tail Lamps for 07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK
These DO NOT fit my 2008 Wrangler. No amount of bending is going to make the tabs long enough to catch to install these. Also take note, to get full functionality you need to run a cable between the lights through the bumper. It also came with no hardware to hang the resistors.
The lights come with no instructions. If you are already familiar with this, you will do it in less then thirty minutes. As a previous reviewer stated, you have to slightly bend the tabs that help attach it to the Jeep. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, don’t worry, you will know it when you see it. My biggest complaint is not having better instructions on dealing with the black cord that goes through the bottom of the Jeep. If you have never done this before, pay attention. When you remove the factory passenger side tail light, look in and look downward. You will see filler foam. You have to pull it up to see the hole that the black cord will feed through. Otherwise, you will be confused as I was. Throw away the foam filler, to my knowledge, it will not serve a purpose. I had to call Putco to ask about this. The good part about this is that I only had to go through one prompt to get a live operator who explained this to me. If something gets confusing, just call them. It’s painless and informative. You will need 2-4 of your own zip ties.
The LED’s on the lights are very bright and look better in person then the video. Crossing my fingers on the endurance for these.
1. Not plug and play. Had to significantly bend the metal tab to get it to catch on the body tub to hold the light in.
2. No provisions were given for holding the resistor away from things prone to melting...and this resistor gets HOT! I drilled holes in a piece of sheet metal inside the body tub and mounted the resistor with bolts and Arctic Silver thermal adhesive, so now the resistor has a proper heat sink and will not catch my Jeep on fire.
3. Yes the lights are really bright, and I appreciate the engineering that went into "decoding" the brake vs. turn signal voltages. The Jeep uses a bright signal for both brake and turn signal. These lights figure out that if only the left or right bright signal is on, it is a turn signal, thus lighting up amber. If both are on, it is a brake light, thus lighting up red. As a result, the hazards blink red, not amber. This does not bother me.
Important note: due to the decoding that these lights do, THE FIRST TURN SIGNAL PULSE IS SKIPPED and the lights do not blink. The turn signal then starts blinking on the SECOND pulse coming from the Jeep. The brake lights show up immediately, which is good because that is safer.
Otherwise, the product worked as expected.
I had these for a year. The lights themselves are really bright and I like the animation and amber lights for the turn signal. However, the instructions are basically worthless. You have to come up with your own mounting solution for the resisters and the instructions offer zero guidance for this. I ended up screwing magnets into them instead of drilling into the body of my car. There's also a wire that must be connected between both of the tail lights beneath the rear of the car so you have to figure out your own routing for this. For how much you have to weave the wires around sharp metal, these should really be in wire looms from the factory (I added my own).
The problems really began after about ten months. These really started to fall apart. The rear housing of the tail lights began to rust and moisture started to seep into the LEDs themselves, causing them to fog up. After a year, the issue got so bad that all of the lights either had spots or were completely fogged up. The manufacturer refuses to honor the warranty unless they're purchased from "authorized dealers" which most sellers of this are not. The seller ended up taking it back and I'll be looking at tail lights from other brands.
I was given these as a gift so did not read the reviews before installing the product. I am disappointed that Quadratec sells these lights with instructions that do not match the product. As mentioned in the other reviews the lack of instructions for mounting the load resistors, and the fact that the mounting tabs have to be bent to hold the lights is very poor. However, after installation these lights look good, and the flashing amber turn signals are a nice feature.
Doesn’t seem to be completely plug and play as there are two light connections one reverse light bulb and one brake bulb but only one connection for the putco light connection. Install doc doesn’t address this.
