Reviews for Rampage Products 99306 Rock Rage Front Bumper for 07-23 Jeep Wrangler JL, JK & Gladiator JT
I had this bumper on my JKU, and now have one on my JLUR. Great bumper for the money. A word of warning, I am replacing my steel bumper with the LED fog lights, and those lights will not mount on the bumper. So you will need aftermarket LED fog lights. This is the only reason for the 4 star, otherwise it is an easy 5 star.
Took awhile to get this from backorder, but this bumper looks awesome. A little shorter than I anticipated at the bottom, as it really shows off a lot of suspension and lower bumper brace (?) vs. the Ace bull bar bumper it is replacing. Took 3 hours to get my old rusty Ace bumper off and maybe 20 minutes to get this bumper mounted on my 08 JK all by myself (about 30 pounds lighter than the Ace too!).
It comes well packaged, but I did put a 8" scratch on the finish using a utility knife to cut through all the tape and wrap. Fixed by spraying black plasti-dip on the scratch and rubbing it in. My only complaint is the round fog lamp holes. The mounting holes and tabs at the holes are lacking to accomodate different round fog lamps unless you stick with the oem fogs. You can use the factory plastic fog mounting brackets with oem fog lights, but you only get 2 tabs to secure them (four would be better) at the hole opening. Besides the two tabs at the top (appx at 11 and 2 o'clock), there are two holes drilled in on either side of the opening. I was able to finally get a new set of Rugged Ridge 11232.27 LED Round Fog Lights installed with the RR mounting kit, but could only get it installed with one bolt through one of the side holes because the RR fog lights would not work with the oem plastic fog mounts. Very difficult to get the same depth on both sides and you have to pre-set the angle, tighten it down and hope it is correct before installing because you wont want the hassle of taking the fog lamps out once they are in. If your aftermarket fogs work with the oem plastic mounts then you have nothing to worry about. At least this bumper has light mounts on the bull bar if you like that. Since I am not running a winch I was able to fab a block for a front license plate from some thin sheet metal. Painted it with black bed liner paint and mounted using the winch holes....looks great.
Looks great, sturdy and really up's the cool factor.. but was challenging to install.. bolts on bumper did not line up with frame holes, off by just enough.. needed to drill out frame holes and take a hammer to some frame metal.. this could frankly be due to jeep manufacturing 'variances' or bumper.. not sure.. in the end was worth the effort.. I know people that had theirs fit exactly..
It comes packaged very nicely with rubber to protect the vulnerable spots and fully wrapped in bubble wrap and cardboard. The installation was easy, just note that the bolts they provide you will need a 19 mm socket (sorta dumb when the rest of the job uses 18mm). Make sure you have a friend help get the bumper onto the bolts it needs to line up right to go on. All in all. Looks great, well made an easy reasonably price upgrade. 4 stars because the instructions should tell you that you need 19mm. But that’s me being critical.
Poor fit. accuracy of bolt placement made mounting very difficult. Had to install with one nut on each side and force together. then install mounting washers, lock washers and nuts. Instructions poor. 2020 gladiator has cable for fog lights inside the bumper. had to dis assemble bumper to get cable. then use it. not in instructions. Purchased extension cable which was not needed and would not work on 2020 gladiator.
DID NOT fit my 2021 Gladiator Overland. The studs in the bumper didn't come close to lining up with the holes in the frame rails. Not even close. Had to use air tools to significantly ream out the holes in the frame rails and after a process of trial and error fitment all night long, finally got it to slide on so we could bolt it down.
Also, listing says it accommodates factory fog lights. This is partially true. My lights are the LEDs included in the "premium LED lighting" package. They had 4 tabs securing them into the factory bumper. On this Rock Rage bumper you can only use 2 tabs. AND one of the lower tabs has to be trimmed off your light so the washer/nut will fit past it for tightening. So, modification has to be made here also.
After spending hours modifying the Jeep to work with this bumper, it finally went on and it does look good. I plan to put the winch on this weekend. I do not like that the fog lights have nothing protecting them from water, mud, road salt, rocks from the tires, etc. I do not like that the bumper didn't fit out of the box. I didn't like having to modify my expensive LED light housings. But overall, for the money, this seems to be a nice bumper. Time will tell if it holds up!!
Received the bumper and after a week, had already developed some surface rust near the bolt holes for the winch. I applied some paint to protect those places.
Great bumper however factory three bolt lights will not fit, this isn’t clearly stated. Bummed I’m rolling without fog lights until I can find something that will work. Should state the type of light needed for bolt up.
overall good construction, however the nuts and bolts for installation are all powder coated and had to be stripped down to get them to install. If you buy this, take the paint off the threads when the bumper is on the ground and run all the nuts down the bolts then take them off to make sure they will install before you put the bumper on the jeep. Also, I have the quardatec LED fog lights and you have to cut off lower inside mounting tab to get it to fit onto the bumper for installation.
The bumper look good. But I had to return it because the bull bar had two dents on it
