Smittybilt Overlander XL Tent Reviews
Where to begin?
The Upsides:
- Firstly the Overlander XL is about half the price of other similar sized roof tents, but is defiantly not half the quality or value.
- Setup was straightforward for two people, and I installed on my Garvin Expedition Rack using the Garvin 29210 Expedition Rack Crossbar Kit. The tent sits solidly and other than the 'rocking' of the Jeep's suspension, is very stable.
- Biggest plus here though is the size. There is ample space for two adults, sufficient for three, and maybe a squeeze for four. However this is the same with ground-tents so I do not feel I'm missing out.
- Plenty of windows and sky-lights, so even in hot climates it is very well ventilated.
- Plenty of 'pockets' are included for small items to be stored inside, and it comes with a USB-powered LED light strip that velcros inside, with a 12V plug extension that allows for you to use alternative USB lights if you wish.
- Build quality is excellent, and the tent feels like it will last us a long time with heavy use.
The Downsides:
- The mattress is a simple 3" foam pad with removable cover, so not the most comfortable. However it is easily removed and replaced with a different filling if you so choose. However we found it comfortable enough and definitely more comfortable than normal tent ground-mats.
- The tent is not 100% sealed from insects, and there are two 4-5" gaps in the material near the hinges that let in quite a few bugs and flies. I suppose not a big issue to stuff some clothes or other material there to block up, but as I live in Sub-Saharan Africa, mosquitoes are a big concern. This seems an obvious oversight considering all of the mosquito-netting used in the doors and windows.
- We have found two pin-hole sized holes in the tent fabric, which were there from the factory. Both are in the veranda fabric and therefore not an issue for the waterproofing of the inside of the tent, and can be patched easily.
- Taking the rainfly on-off while on top of the roofrack is a PITA unless you use an external ladder, or you are willing to walk all over your Jeep's hood/cowling. So if taking it off, make sure you are convinced you don't need it later!
Overall we love it and are very happy with the value for money.
