Questions

Because your YJ currently runs a factory hardtop, the upper rear corners of your door openings are square. Standard soft upper doors feature a rounded rear corner designed to seal against a factory soft top.
Here is exactly what you need to do and the parts required to make this transition:
1. Choose the Right Upper Doors (Crucial for Hardtop Fitment)
If you intend to keep your factory hardtop on the Jeep while running half doors, standard soft uppers will not seal correctly. You have two options depending on your setup:
If keeping the factory hardtop installed: You must use specialized Square-Corner Soft Upper Doors (such as the Bestop element upper doors or equivalent rounded-to-square conversion uppers). These are specifically patterned with a 90-degree upper rear corner to fit the hardtop door opening geometry.
If switching to a soft top at the same time: You can use standard rounded-corner soft uppers, but you will also need to install the soft top's corresponding door surrounds to create the weather seal.
2. Swap or Adapt the Striker Pins (The Latch Problem)
Factory full steel doors use a rotary claw latch that clamps onto a thick, large-diameter latch striker bolted to your YJ's tub. The Bestop 2-Piece Doors use slim, classic steel latch pins.
The Parts Needed: You will need a set of Bestop Door Striker Brackets (Part #51251-01) or standard early-style CJ/YJ pin strikers. These bolt into the existing holes on your Jeep's B-pillar tub frame, replacing your bulky full-door strikers so the thin latch pins on the soft doors can catch securely.
3. Additional Parts Required for Lower Half Doors
If you are buying fabric upper doors to sit on top of factory-style lower steel half doors (instead of a complete fabric 2-piece door kit):
Lower Half Doors: A set of factory steel half doors or aftermarket equivalents (like Key Parts steel half door shells).
Door Hinge Inserts / Bushings: Ensure your lower hinges have intact plastic or brass inserts so the new door pins slide smoothly into your factory body hinges.
Upper Door Inserts: If using steel lower half doors, you will need the plastic grommets/inserts that press into the top rail of the lower door frame. The three vertical prongs of the soft upper doors slide directly down into these inserts.
