Reviews for Smittybilt 76410 XRC Tailgate with Tire Carrier for 07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK
Read the reviews and had my 4wd shop put it on. He’s good and took 2 hours. Just throw the included brake light out. To fish the lock actuator through he has to take the plug off. I did no work but so far no rattle at all, super well made, and looks cool.
Great product! Took just under four hours to swap over. Everything fit well and the instructions were very detailed. I would definitely recommend this to others.
Great item!! Definitely high quality. The instruction were not that great. The order of them isn’t so great or detailed. The Allen screws for cover plate are garbage, recommend replacing them. Had to spend sometime on the phone with customer service for third brake light install. There’s no nuts for strike plate and no washers for hinge pins. The stainless parts must be polished steel, because I do get surface rust. But as a whole it’s worth the money and a seriously sturdy product.
Horrible directions but great tailgate that I love. How can your instructions be so bad?! The customer service is horrible too. The directions literally leave out huge parts.
It's a sturdy product. Very attractive. I do agree with the other guy though, completely. Not everything is covered by the instructions and it makes take a most of a day to get it together and mounted properly depending on your mechanical skills. Those whom may not have allot of tools or are not experienced in mechanics may want to get a professional shop to install it.
The quality of the tailgate is great. The instructions are horrible! There are numerous steps completely left out and some instructions cover several steps of work with just a couple simple sentences. I do a fair amount of DIY and have all the necessary tools, but this took me 7 hours to complete. Smittybilt, you can do better
Really heavy. Poorly designed. First off road trip lots of screws shearing off. Rusting. Doubt anyone’s gonna give my money back. Piece of junk. Keep your tail gate. Get an aftermarket carrier.
Buyer beware. I bought this since I needed a new tailgate and a larger tire carrier. This was possibly the most frustrating install I’ve ever done on my rig. The manufacturing process leaves a lot to be desired. It all sure looks pretty, but be prepared for somethings not to line up. The instructions leave A LOT to be desired. Im pretty sure they made the directions just from looking at their CAD mock up. You’ll find that there are parts in your kit that aren’t mentioned in the directions, but if you look at the pics from smity you’ll see where some of them go. There’s a few rubber spacers that you’re supposed to use, but if you do the bolts won’t reach the weld nuts. Don’t follow the steps the way the directions are layed out or you’ll find yourself taking it back apart to mount the tire. Also, they neglect to tell you that you have to disassemble part of it to put the hinges on. I’m not completely sure how long this thing will last, but it will serve the purpose for now.
Worst instruction I have ever read. No details. Must be expert handyman to install.
Screw holes do not align.
There is a hollow opening between sheets of metal which allow dirt and dust to enter.
Cable holes are to small for adaptors, so I had to splice wires.
Squeaks incessantly from weight of 33" tire.
Probably the worst experience building or fixing anything. First, i was sent an old version of the instructions with the gate. Probably built and took it apart 3 or more times before it was all said and done. Hardware was not labeled and pack was missing multiple items. Went at least 5 times to the hardware store for additional parts. No mention that you needed a hydraulic press to complete installation (who has that)? Tailgate stop broke because there is a part on back order that I did not receive with my kit. Had they actually spent the time to put it on a jeep out of the package, they would have known all the shortcomings. VERY disappointed. More than anything for the waste of time with missing steps/hardware with old instructions. Literally missed like 3 or more steps which made me have to disassemble.
