MasterTop Replacement Soft Top with Tinted Windows in MasterTwill Fabric Reviews
I have finally installed this new top on my 2008 Jeep Wrangler X 2Dr, and while it looks far superior to the original OEM top, there are some concerns I have, still, with the design and installation of this new top that I thought I should share here.
The installation on my specific year includes a conversion kit to change the way the top is held down around the doors from OEM to a cable system. Part of that kit involves installing rubber extrusions into the door surrounds that, on my first attempt, was nigh-on impossible. There were some factors at play, not least of which was the ambient temperature around me (about 75F, direct sun) which had warmed up the rubber, and made it far more tactile and sticky - and less able to be installed easily. I had to wait till the morning after to put those pieces in, when the air was cooler, and the rubber was less pliable - which worked.
There is also, as part of this conversion kit, two straps that attach to the sound bar and to the springs at the end of the cables sewn into the sides of the front section of the top. Installing these straps was fine, and while the instructions indicate to clamp the spring ends closed around the D-ring end of the straps, I would recommend not doing this because when you attempt to lower the top, the straps need to be detached from the springs for the entire top to fold properly and be stowed. That leads to two dangling straps from the sound bar that will flap around in the wind if not properly secured. To do that, I've wrapped them around the roll bars and finagled a way to keep them tight.
The other real design flaw, at least in the top I got, was the discrepancy between the images in the installation pamphlet and the actual rear section of the top. The instructions indicate that you are to reinstall the four screws to the rear bow via the four flaps of cloth that are sewn into that section of the top for that purpose. The only problem is, there are not four flaps of cloth. There is only one larger flap of cloth, and I took the liberty of just piercing that bit of cloth with the screws to the rear bow. I don't know if that's what was intended, but without doing so, the top was very, very flappy when either door window was lowered, and when the top was down totally, it didn't fold correctly.
So, yeah, there are some design flaws in this top, specifically for my make/model of Jeep. I don't know about the later JK models, and how the top would fit on them.
That said, the fabric is FANTASTIC and a MASSIVE upgrade from the OEM top. The sound inside the cabin of the Jeep, especially at highway speeds, is markedly better, and the cable system around the doors has done a good job keeping out the rain (esp up here in Oregon) so far. It's awesome to be able to engage the Sunrider part of the top easily without having to fish out the sides of the top from the lip of the door surrounds - eg: you can flip half the top back on the go. The tinting of the windows is great too, and the quality of the window vinyl is far superior to what had been there before.
I would recommend this top, but I would also caution that there are some design challenges with it, and installation needs to come with a bit more intuition than the guide leads you to believe.
