Reviews for Smittybilt 76851 XRC Rear Bumper with Tire Carrier for 84-01 Jeep Cherokee XJ
Great bumper, and installed with NO issues at all, DO NOT, think the pic of the high lift is correct, Smitty said someone photoshopped that in. It goes accross the top as the instructions say. I had a faulty latch, but smitty was VERY fast to take care of it. I am very happy with it but still wished the jacked stored as the pic shows.
This bumper is great! The 2" receiver is built into the hitch, so you won't need/will have to remove the 2" receiver assembly on your jeep if it is already there. This is heavy duty! It was a bear to get the tire swing installed and tight, but once it was installed, and angled correctly with the latch, it works really well. Only issued is that the spare tire sits back from the jeep to accommodate the items it is designed to carry in front of the grate, but it seems to be the best tire bumper you can get for the Cherokee.
Absolutely nothing wrong with the instructions. I think some people expect hand holding. Total install time was 5 hours, 3 of which was removing the old exhaust bolt strip from the passenger side. What a pain. Rust sucks.
I did have to space the bumper brackets out away from the Jeep body using some washers I had lying around, but having to adjust for manufacturing tolerances is to be expected.
I was able to install just myself, but proper lifting is required. A helper would have been nice, but is not needed.
Fitment good, adjustability good, lined up nicely. Only thing I have concerns about is the latch; it seems a little flimsy and if you don't pay attention to it there's a possibility it could not latch and swing open while driving. Time will tell.
This was pricey, but well worth it.
Great, high quality bumper. Just make sure to call a friend or two when it comes time to install.
The quality of this bumper is excellent. The latch is solid and the bumper travels quiet. Very happy to have my spare tire out of the way and handy so the limited space inside the jeep and on the roof rack can be used more effectively. This is a two man job.
Very pleased with bumper. Works well, install is a two person job and instructions are not the best. YouTube is your friend for this installation. I wish they had added a second locking device for the swing out tire carrier. Fitting can be an issues if your uniframe is twisted in anyway. The included rear rocker guards are not the best. I would spend the extra and get a set of Rusty's off road rear lower rocker guards instead.
Great bumper and carrier. Can't wait to get it muddy!
I absolutely love this bumper. The quality of the steel, welds, and fitment are spot on. I was a little bit frustrated when installing the tire carrier gate. There were no holes drilled in the bumper to house the bolts that were supposed to keep the cam wheel from spinning and the washers that came with the bumper to be installed on the bolt through the hinge pin were not hardened, so the cam kept spinning when I would open and close the gate. A quick trip to the hardware store for some hardened washers, a bolt, and a tap kit and now it works great even after some heavy 4X4 action. I would recommend this bumper to anybody, but you're going to have to do some modifications similar to mine to get it to work 100%. The time and expense of my modifications were my only reason for not giving it a 5-Star rating.
Bumper is solid but not the greatest quality. The half inch tab where the pivot pin goes through was bent down so I had to bend it up with the tire carrier itself scratching the whole thing along the way. The tube bars on the tire carrier itself weren't welding at the same heights causing the high lift jack to look crooked without putting a easher under one side. The instructions are ok but a little misleading. There's tons of hardware but it's hard to figure out what goes where and what uses a washer or doesn't. On the lowest cam setting the tire carrier is still a little high for the locking pin but I assume over time it will sag and work it's way in nicely.
