Reviews for Smittybilt 76851 XRC Rear Bumper with Tire Carrier for 84-01 Jeep Cherokee XJ
Bumper is solid. Doesnt rattle going down the road. Only issue I had is the lug studs that were provided dont lock down in the spare tire mount. After contacting quadratec. I was sent new studs. Same issue. Almost $900 on this bumper and I'm almost a month with it and still cant mount my spare. Customer service reps have been doing what they can to make it right but its aggravating to say the least
Still fighting to get this bumper to fit correctly. Quality is great. Only reason for a 3 is fitment/installation.
I do autobody for a living. I know what I'm doing when working on my Jeeps. Had I known the problems I would have with this, I would have found another, but I was short on time as we were putting this on my son's Cherokee while he was home on leave.
Where do I start? The bumper was completely twisted, leaving a half inch gap on one side and a quarter inch gap on the other. When I finally got a bumper that worked and tried to close the tailgate, it very nearly hit the post for the tire carrier. The carrier itself was warped. The latch was broken and only worked if you put your hand inside and pulled the bar (the handle was useless). The rivets for the rear rocker guards had nowhere to go in the wheel well. I had to modify many parts of this to make it work.
The only reason this received more than one star is Smittybilt's customer service.
This bumper has been way more difficult then it should have been, even from the start. When I first ordered the Bumper Quadratec forgot to send me the 2nd box that had the tire carrier in it.
When installing I had major issues with the the bumper brackets, the brackets were warped (from crappy welding?) and the holes did not align up properly causing me to have to file the holes open drastically.
Overall I had to file 8 holes in the brackets to get this bumper to actually go together. I then had to paint the bare metal to protect it so it does not rust out in 3 seconds (Michigan). A lot of extra work for parts that should fit properly right out of the box.
This is not the highest quality bumper out there for sure. Overall, I wish I would have went with the JCR and just paid the extra money for a quality American made product instead of China (Smittybuilt XRC).
This was a pain from the start, and it should have never been so. Next time I order directly from JCR.
I had the bumper installed by my local Jeep Mechanic. He spent more than 6 hrs trying to get it to work.He wasn't able to align the bumper with the included side panels because the bumper was fabricated approximately 3/8" off center and too the left. This cannot seem to be corrected, making the pinion that swings the tire within a hairs breath of clearance to allow the Jeep's rear hatch to open. Raising it would cancel my ability to open the rear of my xl. Smittybuilt has told me that's within their tolerance. I assure you I won't be being anything else from Smittybuilt. Very poor quality, for a high price and frustration
