Most Jeep heritage editions reach for a memorable paint color, familiar badge, or particular decade.
The 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A, recently announced by the brand as part of its ‘Twelve 4 Twelve’ vehicle initiative, reaches for the moment the entire Jeep story changed direction.
This is the 11th release in the yearlong series of limited-production vehicles celebrating the brand’s 85th anniversary. Of all the themes explored during that campaign, the CJ-2A may be the most consequential. It marks the moment Jeep became something civilians could buy, use, and build a lifestyle around.
Its inspiration is the Willys CJ-2A, the postwar model that took the basic formula proven by the military Willys MB and put it to work on American farms, ranches and factory floors. Introduced in 1945, the CJ-2A helped transform Jeep from a wartime machine into a civilian vehicle—and established the lineage that would eventually lead to today’s Wrangler.
Jeep’s modern tribute does not attempt to recreate that machine literally. The new JL-2A is a leather-trimmed, camera-equipped 2027 Wrangler Rubicon with electronic traction hardware and two available engines.
Yet the connection is more substantial than a historic name stamped onto an otherwise familiar special edition.
Jeep has matched recognizable CJ-2A colors and details with the trail equipment expected from a modern Rubicon. The result is an anniversary model that acknowledges where civilian Jeep ownership began without sacrificing the capability that keeps the Wrangler relevant today.
A Tribute To Jeep’s First Civilian Workhorse
The original CJ-2A arrived in July 1945 as the first civilian Jeep Brand vehicle. Its military roots were obvious, but its mission had changed. Instead of carrying soldiers and equipment, the CJ-2A was marketed as a compact work vehicle that could plow fields, pull implements, operate equipment, and travel where conventional cars or trucks struggled. Early advertising often showed it working alongside tractors and other agricultural machinery.
That utilitarian history explains several of the new Wrangler’s less obvious details.
A commemorative plate inside the rear swing gate depicts the CJ-2A in farm and factory settings. The shifter wears a Willys-Overland medallion. Small graphics in the dashboard vents include a seven-slot grille and Willys silhouette.
Even the JL-2A name connects the current Wrangler’s JL platform code with the historic CJ-2A designation.
Orange Wheels Make The Historical Connection
The JL-2A’s bright orange wheels will attract most of the initial attention, but these 17-inch retro-style rims use Jeep’s Joose orange finish as a reference to the Sunset Red wheels offered on early CJ-2A models. Matching orange tow hooks extend the accent color to the front and rear of the vehicle.
Gobi returns as the most direct companion color, providing a modern interpretation of the warm Harvest Tan associated with early civilian Jeeps. Jeep’s military-inspired ’41 green creates another historically appropriate combination. Bright White, Sting Gray, Ghost and Joose are also available for buyers who prefer a different treatment.
Dark Metallic Grey grille accents, body-color fender flares and a body-color three-piece hardtop give the JL-2A a more coordinated exterior than the contrast-heavy appearance of many Wrangler models.
Every JL-2A also receives 33-inch BFGoodrich KO2 all-terrain tires. They give the special edition a proper Rubicon stance while leaving the retro wheels visible enough to remain the design’s focal point.
The finished package is unmistakably modern, but it does not rely on oversized logos to explain the reference. Anyone familiar with early civilian Jeeps should immediately recognize the tan-or-green body, warm-colored wheels, and simple visual character.
Heritage Tan Replaces the Typical Black Cabin
For this edition, Jeep carried that historical theme farther inside than it does with many appearance packages.
The JL-2A combines Heritage Tan Nappa leather with Bison Brown trim and Desert Orange contrast stitching. That palette offers a contemporary take on the tan seating of the original CJ-2A while giving the cabin a warmer look than the mostly black interiors common across the Wrangler lineup.
The smaller Willys references reward a closer look, but the cabin is not trapped in 1945.
A forward-facing TrailCam with an integrated washer is standard, helping the driver see obstacles that disappear below the hood line. Jeep also includes the Convenience Group, which adds equipment such as remote start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a universal garage-door opener.
The combination captures the central contradiction behind almost every successful heritage vehicle: owners want the visual story of the past without surrendering the comfort and technology of the present.
Rubicon Hardware Beneath The Retro Details
Jeep could have built the JL-2A on a basic Wrangler platform and allowed the orange wheels to do most of the work. Instead, the company started with the Rubicon edition.
That brings electronic locking front and rear differentials, an electronic front sway-bar disconnect, a Rock-Trac heavy-duty part-time four-wheel-drive system, and a 4.10 axle ratio. The 33-inch all-terrain tires complete a factory package intended for real trail use rather than parking-lot nostalgia.
Buyers can choose between two familiar engines. The 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 produces 285 horsepower, while the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 270 horsepower. Depending on the powertrain, the JL-2A can be configured with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.
Jeep will offer both two-door and four-door versions, an important decision for a vehicle intended to connect with the compact proportions of an early CJ without excluding buyers who need the space and practicality of a Wrangler Unlimited.
No, the four-door JL-2A parked next to an original CJ-2A will not look particularly small or simple. But both vehicles reflect the same basic idea: a removable-top four-wheel-drive machine designed to remain useful after the pavement ends.
An Optional Package With Limited Production
The JL-2A edition adds $4,995 to the price of a 2027 Wrangler Rubicon.
Jeep says that is only $115 more than a comparably equipped Rubicon once the package’s included equipment is considered. That makes the pricing easier to justify for shoppers already planning to order a well-equipped Rubicon. Most of the additional cost buys usable content, with the model-specific colors and historical details providing the distinction.
Final 2027 Wrangler pricing can vary by body style, engine, transmission, destination charge, and other options. Based on current Rubicon pricing, the JL-2A is expected to begin around $53,000 before additional equipment.
Orders are scheduled to open in October, and Jeep says the model will be produced in limited quantities.
