Reviews for Harken 7803.JEEP Hoister Garage Storage 4-Point Lift System for 87-24 Jeep Wrangler JL, JK, TJ & YJ
The hardware seems good and it seems to work well. Make sure you have enough space between the "rope organizer" and the "welded eye hook" so that you can raise/lower the top enough for your application because that distance is also your raise/lower height. I may move mine around a bit so I can lower the top to the ground so I can store it out of the way for the summer (my garage roof is low enough that I hit my head on the suspended hard top).
The instructions that came with the kit, however, were kind of terrible. I understand that suspending a 100lb+ load from a ceiling is something you need to prepare properly for, but the instructions make things much more complicated and opaque than they need to be. It's really not that complicated if you can solidly mount into your rafters.
I like it.It took some time to install.I have a short ceiling and a small garage ,but I made it work.It is not rocket science , you should know how to read a tape and turn a wrench.I would recommend.
Ok, this thing is nice. But what a pain in the butt to install! Make sure you check your rafters to see which way they run prior to going to the store for wood and lag bolts. A lot of up and down the ladder but if thing doesn’t fall... it will be worth it! Good luck!
This is the second one I have bought. They work great. The only thing that keeps me from giving it 5 stars is that you have to be very careful about the length and and angle that you mount the eye bolt from the center of the pulleys. The other issue is that the pulley is difficult to lower and I have to climb up on a ladder to get it to open up.
This product is completely worth the money. It is a simple concept that works great. The installation directions are a bit "foggy", but you can figure them out if you have a little bit of savvy. The hardest part, without question, is the knots that they have you tie. The directions to tie these knots were a little difficult, for me. This part was the hardest part and took up the most time. I would suggest doing this with another person, that always seems to help the process run a little more smoothly. All in all, I gave it a 4 star b/c I think it is a great product for the price. This hoist system is very easy to operate (my wife does it by herself). The knots just gave me some trouble and the directions could be a little more clear. But I am very happy with the product and would highly recommend it to anyone.
They do the job. Can’t really find fault. My load is light (rear top gladiator) so it isn’t working to hard. I’d buy it again if I needed to
For the functionality, I'd give it a 5. It works very well and is easy to hoist upwards. Lowering the item is a bit more difficult, in my opinion. But I am able to do it, with full control of the speed. The locking mechanism works very well so far. But since I don't want my hardtop dropped from 10 feet, and especially not onto my Jeep hood, I added a couple extra ratchet straps for underneath, which I ran from eye hook to eye hook.
In terms of the install, I'd give it a 3 out of 5. It was not easy. I am not a super handy person, so that didn't help. But the combination of written instructions and YouTube videos seemed to skip a couple of the tougher parts of the install, or didn't get detailed enough. But I am an accountant, so I need those details. You'll want a second set of hands to help with getting the leveling perfect.
The instructions could be a little better regarding the frame on your ceiling, but it really does depend on spacing of your attic rafters. Once you have those cut, it goes up fairly easy. Materials all seem strong and should last a while. I've seen people use pool noodles for the straps, but after strapping this together, it really lifts on the hard plastic and does not push into the rubber weather seal on the rear windshield. They got in the way for me, so I tossed this to the side.
Missing that 5th star just for ease of use. The cleat prevents any slipping, but may not be the easiest option if lifting/lowering all on your own unless you align your Wrangler absolutely perfect under the hoist. You will probably need another person to help guide it down. I'm not saying that's a product flaw, but to me, a 5-star item is perfectly flawless from cost, ease of use, material, etc.
I have no problem recommending this cheap hoist option for your top. You can spend more money for something that could be easier, but you're spending money! I also looked at the Racor and Lange Simple Lift, but went this option based off the configuration of my garage. The Racor does not get your hardtop up to the ceiling, this one gets withing a few inches.
Good kit for the price. One person job to remove and install the top now, BIG PLUS! I am installing safety straps when on the ceiling as a precautionary measure. Not sure if I should trust the strap clips? Could also add a mount to wrap the rope on the wall.
So far the Harken Hoist is working great! You will definitely want to get a pool noddle to protect the hard top from the nylon straps. I decided to go this route before spending extra money on an electric hoist-- now I see no reason for upgrading.
